In 2015 and 2016, the school facilities of the 5 camps in the Tindouf Region were severely affected by adverse weather conditions that weakened or destroyed buildings made of adobe (sun-dried mud bricks). UNICEF, UNHCR and their partners are presently conducting significant reconstruction and rehabilitation works in terms of school infrastructure.

In the primary schools of the 5 wilayas, the existing latrines and sanitation systems are old and generally out of order. In order to ensure basic hygienic conditions and sustainable access, the programme provides for the construction of robust, easy-to-use and easy to maintain facilities as well as for awareness-raising sessions on hygiene.

Two schools will be rebuilt or rehabilitated, allowing 2,082 children (boys and girls aged 6 to 12) to benefit from operational educational facilities. The latrines and sanitation systems of 6 structures will also be rebuilt or rehabilitated, allowing 5,325 children (girls and boys) and staff to benefit from operational health facilities.

As in previous interventions, the focus will be on the technical characteristics and the quality of the reconstruction works. Based on the experience gained in this field, sustainability will be a priority in the choice of the technical approach, the quality of the works and the equipment used (making sure it is both reliable and easy to maintain).

To ensure that these structures meet the expectations of the users, and that the latter can appropriate them, TGH will pay particular attention to the participation in the unfolding of the programme of the various actors (Heads of schools, teachers, parents' committees, children themselves), but also authorities (wali, Ministry of Education).

The taking into account of the importance of gender, which is essential in schools - particularly regarding toilets since it has a direct impact on girls' schooling - will result in the establishment of adapted latrines, which will prevent girls from having to go home, and possibly not to go back to school. These toilets will all be equipped with locks (as boys' toilets), clearly separated from the latrines intended for boys, and designed to accommodate specific needs. Here again, the gender aspect will be discussed beforehand with the authorities and the teaching staff in order to ensure that expectations are fully taken into account.

Access to water, essential for hygiene promotion and disease control, will be provided in rehabilitated facilities, in order to break further transmission of disease vectors. Hand washing devices will be included in the rehabilitation project, and soap will be made available.
