After having conducted a needs assessment in the town of Golo in Jebel Marra in February 2017, TGH teams identified a considerable lack of available drinking water per inhabitant, as well as a shortage of health services, especially in schools (1 latrine for 105 people), and a lack of good hygiene practices.
Hygiene awareness information panel
As this situation may deteriorate during the rainy season, TGH will provide a response based on a basic WASH device to meet the most urgent needs of the 20,037 inhabitants of Golo - specifically the Alsadaga and East Quarter districts of the city - permanently affected by the conflict in the Jebel Marra area, and identified as the most exposed to risks.
Improvements to water access systems and the rehabilitation of defective water points, open wells and water reservoirs are planned. Control of these water points will also be ensured by regular bacteriological tests and monthly monitoring. For sustainable management, "Water Point Management Committees" will be set up, with the active participation of community members, some of which will be selected to be trained on good management (quality and organization).
Hygiene promotion campaigns are also planned, with the training of hygiene promoters selected from the population. The provision of waste collection tools and water tank cleaning campaigns will be integrated into the awareness-raising sessions. The third part of the programme includes the rehabilitation of sanitary facilities within the city hospital and the establishment of similar facilities in schools, in addition to hand washing devices.
