Help to improve the conditions of hygiene of 38,000 Saharawi women refugees and evaluate their families’ needs in
terms of personal and domestic hygiene, in Aoussert, El Aioun, Dakhla, Smara and « 27 Février » refugee camps –
South of Tindouf – ALGERIA.
The Distribution of Hygiene Kits project, implemented between November 2005 and July 2006, went very satisfactorily
with regards to the women beneficiaries and the Saharawi authorities.
Concurrently, we identified the fact that the quantities distributed (2 distributions of 33,000 kits) failed to cover all the needs, and that we needed to further assess hygiene to provide an operational, appropriate response to the population’s needs in terms of quantity and quality.
Therefore, Triangle, with support from ECHO and the Saharawi authorities, decided to launch a new, wider-reaching programme. Within it, we will conduct a survey on the Saharawi’s Knowledge, Attitude and Practices related to hygiene.
With this new programme, the amount of target beneficiaries grows from 33,000 to 38,000, and includes unmarried young women who have reached puberty. The amount of distributions also grows from 2 to 5 annual distributions.
Selection of suppliers:
The suppliers who took part in the 2005/2006 project can provide Triangle with the same products at an interesting rate. Therefore, in agreement with ECHO, we have decided to use these same suppliers without making a new call for tenders.
Composition of the kits:
KAP survey
The aim is to identify the Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of the population in terms of personal and domestic hygiene .
Organisation of distribution:
Distributions are carried out in the same way as in previous projects. Thus, each daïra is divided into 4 circumscriptions. In each, several female « group leaders » represent a certain amount of women-project beneficiaries.

Organisation of discussion groups:
Discussions groups about personal and domestic hygiene will take place in each refugee camp: two groups of women and two groups of men, led by a Saharawi supervisor from Triangle’s team.
One-to-one:
we will conduct 30 individual consultations. These will include Area Chiefs and doctors among other members of the community.
