- Assistance to Elderly and Disabled People
In 2002, we partnered with the National Union of Saharawi Women to build and equip a second home for disabled people in the Dakhla camp. In addition, we extended our training program for Saharawi staff (group leaders and youth workers) to other camps, thus improving the care given to young, disabled people. A micro-credit pilot experience was also carried out in the camp of Dakhla. In 2003, the construction of a third special education centre was undertaken in El Ayoune. Moreover, the micro-credit project (creation of stalls selling everyday products, with the income generated by the activities being used to help disabled people and their families) was extended to three other camps in Ausserd, El Ayoune and Smara.
In 2004 and 2005, work in the mechanical repair workshop continued, as did our assistance to care structures for disabled people (maintenance of centres, equipment, staff training, etc).

- Bleach Production Unit
A small bleach production unit for the institutions was set up in 2003. Production and distribution of bleach to the hospitals, schools, etc. continues throughout the year.

- Repair and maintenance of the ambulances and trucks used for food and water distribution

Support to Care Structures for Disabled Peoples

  • Funding: Lord Michelham Foundation
  • Global budget: €20,000
  • Duration: 10 months (April 2004 to December 2004)

Supplementing the activities managed in the UNHCR-financed programme, Triangle supported various care structures for disabled people thanks to a grant from the Lord Michelham Foundation.

The following activities were implemented:

  • Participation in the organisation of a seminar, “The reality of disabled people”, proposed by the Secretary of State for Social Assistance and Promotion of Women.

  • Creation of a training booklet for carers and youth workers, internal and external training of Saharawi managers working with disabled people.

Creation of a Bakery

  • Funding: Belgian Technical Cooperation
Works council of Caisse d’Epargne Rhône-Alpes
  • Global budget: €19,000
  • Duration: 12 months (signature in 2002, project completed
    in 2004)

The aim of this project was to provide a group of disabled adults with a permanent activity to empower them and enable integration in the Sawary community. Integration was also astrong component of Triangle’s support programme for disabled people in the Wilaya of Aoussert; amongst other elements, the project offered vocational training as a means of integration.

In this way, the entire population of the camp benefited from a reduced-cost quality service, and within Saharawi society, people’s perception of disability was altered and improved.

At the same time, via financial support, this programme promoted and stimulated the creation of small, easy-to-access bread shops held by disabled people.
