Food Safety in Bualapha District – Province of Khammouane

PhotoTGH
Region Rhone Alpes
  • Funding: the Rhône-Alpes region
  • Global budget: € 213,495
  • Duration: 15 months (March 2010 – May 2011)

The objective of the project is to improve food safety by optimising the irrigation of paddy-fields during the rainy season. Cultivation can thus be launched earlier in the year and the work time dedicated to planting can be better spread out. We should see an increase of production (longer vegetative period) and of land surfaces per farmer. In addition, an optimal level of water in the paddy-fields favours rice growth while avoiding the proliferation of weeds.

Triangle G H aims to achieve an average yield increase of one ton per hectare, thus reaching an average yield of 2,5 tons per hectare on cultivated land. At the same time, this project will focus on the preparation of an extra 120 hectares of land for rice growing in areas that are not yet cultivated.

Triangle G H plans to rehabilitate two dams and build four new gabion sills as well as 15 small ones. These works are easy to use, do not demand the purchase of extra equipment or fertilizer and contribute to preserving the rice variety generally grown. These small irrigation systems are easily exploitable by small communities (about thirty families) and present both technical and environmental benefits.

The project is being developed in collaboration with the local Farming Services (PAFO) and with the participation of target communities. The project will benefit 250 farming families and lead to an increase of rice production for 1,405 inhabitants.
