Conditions in Sihnung:
Damage to infrastructures near and in the fish farms
- Protection dike of the river flattened by 300 m to ground level;
- 990 m of inter-basin dikes damaged, representing over 2000 m3 of materials carried away by water;
- Over a dozen water conveyance and evacuation works destroyed;
- 387 m of drainage ditches damaged;
- 860 m3 of rubble in the fish farm;
- Several thousand m3 of sand and gravel have poured into canals and rivers, raising stream-bed level and considerably increasing risk of new flooding.
Fish losses:
Over 9 ha of aquaculture pools flooded, causing loss of about 50% of 2010’s production. Sadly, a major part of the reproducers have been lost, along with most of the juvenile fish planned for 2011.
Agricultural losses
It appears that all 40 ha of farming lands managed by the farm are flooded and 2,5 ha totally destroyed. A subsequent mission will allow more specific assessment of the scope of damage.
Conditions in Yonggwang
Damage to infrastructures close to and in the fish farms
- Several points of the main dike are damaged over a total length of about 500 m;
- Two large works (U points of the hydro-electric canal) are damaged;
- One wing of the aquaculture building (environ 120 m2) is destroyed;
- As in Sinhung, sand and gravel in canals and rivers (estimated 66,000 m3), considerably increasing risk of new flooding.
Fish losses
- Approximately 3 ha of pools damaged, of which only one part is in production. Fish losses are under assessment but are expected to represent 10 to 20% of the fish production forecast in 2010;
- Loss of juveniles is regrettable but should not have major impact on the next years of production
Agricultural losses
- Approximately 1 ha of corn drowned;
- Protection levees of farming lots damaged.
In concert with the EuropeAid scheme, and thanks to consecutive funding from AAP* (€100,000 & €175,000), Triangle G H performs rehabilitation and protection of the fish farms and their production means by:
- Providing food to the Korean work teams in the food for work context;
- Supplying building sites with materials to protect the works in areas where water erosion is at its worse (both at normal times and during floods). Purchase of galvanized steel wire and geotextile membranes will allow conception and implementation of gabion cages and bases. In order to meet the local authorities’ requests for help, Triangle G H has decided to direct its action at supplying goods specifically geared to aquaculture (gabions, geotextiles), as opposed to cement and fuel.
