Yemen

Foreword

Fortified by their experience in partnership with the UNHCR in Iraqi Kurdistan, the Association decides, at the beginning of 1998, to support Somalian refugees fleeing civil war (and taking refuge in Yemen).

For seven years, Triangle G H has developed actions towards refugees, aiming at supporting the creation of income generating activities (handicrafts, breeding, farming...) and entertaining activities (games, library, sport, music…), at offering remedial courses and a professional training to young Somalians, and at providing a social follow up to the most vulnerable people.

In the month of March 2000, we end a sanitation programme on the water network in Aden. A total of 14.000 households have access to drinking water and to a sewerage system. Concurrently, a waste collection system is set up.

Afterwards, other projects were carried out towards Yemeni people, notably a rehabilitation programme of farming infrastructures in the Wadi Hadramaout and a rehabilitation programme of the water conveyance network on the Island of Socotra.

Today, we further developed our activities in Yemen in five areas in diversified contexts, requiring operations ranging from emergency intervention (Governorate of Hajjah), via rehabilitation (Governorate of Hadramout) to the field of rural development. These diversified projects always aim at enhancing the local farming capacities, implying various implementing modes and activities, from daily close follow up (Socotra), to local capacity building (Hadramout).
