Assistance to Refugees from Algiers

The beneficiaries are mainly sub-Saharan refugees and asylum seekers living in the outskirts of Algiers (Cheraga, Delly Brahim, Beni Messous, Bordj el Bahri…).

Indeed, on December 31, 2010, approximately 139 refugees and 313 asylum seekers were present in the area, under UNHCR care. Most of these people hailed from sub-Saharan Africa (Democratic republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Ivory Coast, Chad, Liberia, Somalia, Cameroon, but also Iraq, Palestine and Syria). As their status is not recognised by Algeria, these urban refugees could not enter the work market and consequently lived in total poverty until the UNHCR implemented its assistance program in December 2009. Some refugees find small jobs in the informal market but no statistics are available on the subject.

During this programme, TGH will run the following operations:

Assistance, accommodation, payment of expenses and, if applicable, follow-up of minor works in the living spaces (plumbing, electricity…)
Provide predefined food aid on a monthly basis
Provide powdered milk, cereal and nappies for children and hygiene kits for women and children
Social care
Exceptional assistance for children at risk who are not under adult care
