Since 2014 and the emergence of the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria, conflicts have caused many losses and destruction. TGH works with children, the most vulnerable population in the face of these profound upheavals.

This child protection and legal support programme in Balad District (Salah El Din Governorate) has four components.

The first component identifies children at risk and sets up emergency support via various specialised services. Individualised case management follow-up provides appropriate responses, taking into account the family and community contexts, and helps fight child labour, early marriage, drop-out of school or health problems. Particular attention is paid to complex cases (children recruited by armed groups, victims of physical or sexual violence…).

The second component develops an integrated approach to protection and education. TGH provides psychosocial support and accompanies beneficiaries in learning spaces - including formal schools where possible - according to age, gender and specific needs. The mobility of some teams makes it possible to reach children and families who do not have access to certain services, to understand their needs and to encourage them to access life-skills activities, supplemented for adolescent girls by sessions on resilience, well-being, development, self-confidence and family and social interaction.

The third component strengthens child protection at the community level and the capacities of relevant stakeholders, involved at all stages. In particular, TGH supports child protection structures (child protection committees, youth clubs), involving them in psychosocial support activities or awareness campaigns, and training them in child protection issues (principles and foundations, safe identification and orientation, child protection). Links with school structures will ensure a harmonious sharing of information and references, and develop their active role in promoting a protective environment for access to education.

The last component concerns access to the rights of children and their families. Justice Center provides legal assistance through consultations and individualised support regarding missing documents, detention (representation and issuance of a power of attorney for detainees, including juveniles), legal custody and adoption.
Justice Center organises awareness sessions on access to rights and assistance, and distributes mass information brochures.
