After the recent overthrow of President Al-Bashir and the establishment of a transitional government, the Sudanese political context remains unstable. The conflict in the Jebel Marra region between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Abdul Wahid faction of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA-AW) has led to significant population movements in the country. According to OCHA, in 2016, between 160,000 and 195,000 civilians were displaced. In 2018, an upsurge in conflict led to new waves of displacement (about 15,000 people, OCHA 10/2018). In addition, since the beginning of 2018 the macroeconomic difficulties that have plagued Sudan, namely extreme high inflation rates (74% in 12/2018) and shortages in cash, fuel, bread etc., have led to a reduction of the population’s purchasing power and thus an increase in poverty.

This conflict, combined with the current economic crisis, has resulted in significant humanitarian needs in the town of Golo. The response implemented by TGH proposes an integrated approach in the areas of water, hygiene, sanitation (WASH) and food security. The project provides emergency assistance to people forced to move within the country as well as to the returnees in order to give them access to quality basic services and promote their resilience.

In the field of food security:

• TGH supports displaced and returnees and vulnerable households by providing them with agricultural inputs (seeds and tools) necessary for the rapid recovery of their activities.
• TGH is continuing its "home gardens" activity launched under its previous project, it ensures a way to improve nutrition at the household level and thus self-reliance.
• Beekeeping activities for young people also help to improve the resilience and local skills of the population. 

TGH's intervention in the field of water, hygiene and sanitation is twofold in Golo:

TGH is building, rehabilitating and protecting water points and creating community mechanisms to manage these essential services. The objective is to ensure the sustainability of existing water management committees and hygiene promotion mechanisms created under previous projects. The sustainability of the actions is guaranteed through specific trainings and support to water user committees and institutions. However, in the villages surrounding Golo, improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains an important issue.

In the long term, 75,787 people will benefit directly and indirectly from the action implemented by TGH.
