The chronic instability of basic services in the localities of Kreinik, Beida, El Geneina (West Darfur), Um Dukhun and Jebel Marra (Central Darfur) is compounded by the increased pressure on natural resources. This situation is the result of a lack of infrastructure as well as the wave of 40,000 displaced people who fled the violence that took place at the end of 2019 in El Geneina. This has resulted in a considerable deficit in the protection of local populations.

During the implementation of the project, TGH also has to deal with the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to protect both staff and beneficiaries, specific health measures and guidelines are being put in place. This situation requires an integrated approach in order to provide a response to the most urgent humanitarian needs. TGH's activities are therefore based on a response that ensures equal access to WASH services, non-food items (NFIs) and emergency shelters that will enable beneficiaries to regain a minimum level of dignity and mitigate health, environmental and protection risks.

Due to the specific situations and needs of each population and their differentiated vulnerabilities to external factors, TGH proposes solutions adapted to each population profile to meet their most urgent needs.
Finally, in addition to responding to urgent needs, TGH integrates in its strategy elements of capacity building and a transfer of responsibility for water access facilities to the targeted populations whenever possible.

Initially the project was due to start on 1st April 2020, but because of the serious violence that occurred on the outskirts of El Geneina at the end of 2019, TGH decided to proceed, as early as February, with the additional distribution of NFIs and emergency shelters for the benefit of 7,420 identified vulnerable people.

Then, in order to provide a relevant and rapid response to the population affected by the above-mentioned disasters, TGH is deploying an emergency WASH stock but also a buffer stock of NFIs and emergency shelters and then carrying out the corresponding distribution activities to 16,500 beneficiaries.

At the same time, the project aims to improve WASH protection services and maintain them for the benefit of 49,486 identified vulnerable people. This will be achieved through the rehabilitation, construction and/or improvement of the water supply system in the localities concerned as well as through awareness sessions on hygiene promotion, health issues and the risks of gender-based violence related to sanitation and water supply. In addition, support is provided in the management and maintenance of infrastructure through the formation of water supply committees.

Due to the emergency context, TGH is prepared, through this project, for the rapid deployment of emergency distributions in kind in order to quickly reach the beneficiaries and respond as precisely as possible to their needs. In order to do so, the preparation is done through a constant monitoring of the situation in Darfur in order to anticipate potential scenarios in areas of recurrent tensions.
