Sohung is a town of around 30 000 inhabitants of North Hwanghae province, located around 100 km South of Pyongyang, in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

TGH has already implemented two prior WASH complementary programs in Sohung between 2012 and 2014, funded by Oxfam HK and the Swedish Cooperation SIDA (called phase 1), in order to improve access to drinking water and sanitation facilities for the population of 5 of the 10 districts of Sohung City. The current program (phase 2) aims at pursuing prior actions and filling the gaps in district 3 in terms of drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Regarding Sohung context, water access remains inadequate both in quality and quantity for the inhabitants of some remaining districts of the town. Indeed, the existing water infrastructure in district 3 is old and out of order, alluvial aquifer is polluted by human activity and most of the population is fetching water from unprotected wells. Moreover, the availability of water resources is fluctuating, especially according to the intensity of the dry season. Besides, the water chore is not gender balanced in DPRK as there are 67.5% of women and 32.5% of men engaged everyday in water collecting activities.

Regarding sanitation facilities, there are currently no wastewater plants and the existing collection pipes are scarce and their states hazardous. Thus, sewage and other bacteriological polluted water are contaminating all the water collection points in the city. For all these reasons, needs still have to be addressed.

The action will be carried out throughout:
