Despite a relative improvement of the security situation over the past years, Darfur remains prone to open conflict, as illustrated by the major clashes in 2020 and 2021 which have led to new waves of massive displacement in Central Darfur (19.300 persons in Golo in January 2021) and in West Darfur (164.985 people have been displaced across Geneina and surrounding villages in April 2021).

As of today, there are still 115.525 IDPs in Al Geneina town, out of which 92% are still gathered in schools and other public buildings, where they live in makeshift exiguous shelters with very poor access to public services, including water and sanitation facilities.

TGH follows an integrated approach, combining Emergency Shelter/Non-Food Items (ES/NFI), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Education interventions in the areas, maximising the impact on global living conditions and resilience capacities while reinforcing emergency preparedness.

First, immediate ES/NFI and WASH needs are insured if needed in the wake of an emergency for 5.250 individuals in acute need of assistance in West Darfur, in coordination with local stakeholders (local authorities, communities and humanitarian actors).
Second, WASH and Education assistance is provided as a response to the events listed above in the Al Geneina IDPs sites. Wash support includes access to clean water, to dignified and safe sanitation facilities including latrines, hand washing points and garbage collection, targeted hygiene promotion and provision of key WASH-related NFI. Latrines are gender- segregated, and made accessible to people with specific needs, in particular disabled. Hygiene promotion activities are ensured, focusing on essential key messages contextualised to the specific situation of each site. IDPs are supported by the provision of 850 hygiene kits and dignity kits. In terms of education, TGH aims to increase 4 schools’ capacity in order to absorb new pupils displaced from other schools, through the rehabilitation of classrooms, the provision of dignified WASH services and the targeted provision of key furniture. School kits are distributed to improve learning environment and alleviate households’ capacities to cover education related items. TGH provides training for teachers and parent-teachers association members on issues relevant to protection challenges.

Third, activities aiming to mitigate the impoverishment of basic services due to conflict and population displacement are implemented in West Darfur (Kreinik) and Central Darfur (Um Dukhun and Golo), targeting WASH and education needs relevant to the areas.
