World Water Day in Vakaga: Let’s accelerate change together!

22 March was no ordinary date in Birao.

Yesterday, to mark World Water Day, the TGH team in the Central African Republic joined forces with local authorities and refugee communities in the Korsi neighbourhood to celebrate access to water as a vital resource and a means of restoring dignity. This event was part of a project supported by the European Union (DG ECHO).

For several years, TGH has been working to improve access to water for host and refugee communities in the Vakaga region. The Korsi neighbourhood in the town of Birao, home to over 27,000 Sudanese refugees, has notably benefited from two 25 m³ reservoirs thanks to the efforts of our WASH team. As part of the ongoing installation of this type of infrastructure, TGH provides support and raises awareness among local communities about water-related issues.

This year’s World Water Day in Vakaga provided an opportunity to:

  • A multi-sectoral mobilisation in the run-up to the event, enabling the organisation of the day and bringing together administrative authorities (prefect and sub-prefect), local elected representatives, OCHA, UNHCR, the National Commission for Refugees and the NGO Nourrir, as well as refugee communities.

  • Awareness-raising and a call to action. Moving beyond speeches, the focus was on equitable management and the involvement of everyone in water management and maintaining facilities. The ceremony concluded with a practical initiative to improve hygiene and clean water points, involving both the authorities and the community.
