This 15-months programme was initially designed to address urgent needs of conflict- and/or displacement-affected populations and vulnerable host communities. It adopts an integrated approach, including Nutrition, WASH, Health and Protection to respond to a complex situation, merging the most recent crisis with a protracted regional and national crisis and an on-going global crisis. Since 2021’s military coup, the economic situation has been worsening and the price of food and fuel has been increasing.

In 2022, inflation, massive floods that hit significant areas of the country, and the upsurge of armed conflict for the access to and control of natural resources have brought a new wave of displaced population across the country. In April 2023, the transition to a civilian government was interrupted by the start of a war between the Sudanese Army Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) which, differently from the past, has been affecting the peripheral areas of the country as well as its capital city, Khartoum and sister towns. The critical needs of 2,231,523 IDPs (July 2023, IOM) add onto those of 25M overall identified by OCHA, and revolve around food, water, hygiene and sanitation, health, nutrition, and emergency shelter. If not addressed, they will lead to crisis into crisis, preventable outbreaks and an increase in the mortality due to malnutrition and underlying causes. Due to the extraordinary circumstances, TGH and PUI, with the addition of SI, intend to deliver integrated life-saving interventions designed to support conflict affected populations in Sudan in ensuring their own survival and overcoming the trauma of war.

The partners designed a comprehensive and integrated programme including Nutrition, Health, WASH and Child Protection, supported by a community mobilization approach in order to positively impact the target population at various levels.
