Programme details
This project was designed to address the urgent needs of populations affected by conflict and/or displacement and vulnerable host communities in West Darfur, Sudan, and in the Ouaddaï province of Chad. In Sudan, thanks to our long-standing presence, particularly in Darfur, TGH implements WASH activities for both displaced populations and host communities. As part of this project, TGH organises hygiene promotion sessions through trained volunteers. In order to help those affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, TGH is extending its assistance to Sudanese refugees in Chad. TGH assists both the Sudanese refugee population and the host community in Ouadaï.
In a context marked by massive population displacement and growing pressure on resources, humanitarian action has been undertaken in Sudan and Chad to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions. In Sudan, in West Darfur State, an intervention is targeting 20,000 people, including host communities, refugees and returnees, to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases. The action consists of providing basic sanitation infrastructure and strengthening hygiene knowledge and behaviours. In Chad, in the Ouaddaï region, affected by a massive influx of Sudanese refugees and recurrent crises exacerbated by poverty and climate challenges, 38 households (188 people) are receiving similar support. These initiatives respond to a major humanitarian emergency, with 24.8 million people in Sudan and 6 million in Chad in need of humanitarian assistance in 2024, according to United Nations estimates.
