Ensuring access to water for all in Aden, Yemen

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen remains unresolved.

Ongoing conflict continues to fuel this crisis, causing massive population displacement, extreme malnutrition, overloaded health services and degraded water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.

Access to drinking water in the city of Aden is difficult due to the deterioration of part of the water supply network, which has an estimated leakage rate of 45%. With a population of over 1.7 million in the governorate of Aden, this results in frequent water shortages and supply interruptions.

In order to meet the water needs of the people of Aden, TGH has been rehabilitating the city’s water network since 2021, helping to increase the water supply. To date, operations have restored 55 wells around the city, benefiting the following districts: Crater, Maalla, Tawahi, Bureiqah and Khormaksar.

Over the past few months, TGH has been working hard to renovate the main water pipeline that connects the Bir Ahmed drilling field to the Aden Isthmus.

A total of 1,800 metres of pipe is currently being installed in two sections of the network. Once completed, the project will provide over 57,000 people with access to 15 litres of drinking water per person per day.

TGH’s work on the Aden water supply network is carried out with the support of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs’ Crisis and Support Centre.

Recently, our team welcomed back Ms Catherine Corm-Kammoun, the French Ambassador to Yemen, who has been following our progress for several years. During her visit to our intervention areas, our team had the opportunity to present our current achievements and their impact.
