Rehabilitation of water points and hygiene awareness in Vakaga

TGH is carrying out activities to rehabilitate water points and conduct hygiene awareness sessions in Vakaga Prefecture, Central African Republic.

In the Central African Republic, local populations in the Vakaga prefecture face severe shortages of drinking water and a lack of adequate sanitation facilities on a daily basis. To meet their needs, TGH carries out interventions in the water, hygiene & sanitation (WASH) sector.

With the support of DG ECHO, several water points have been rehabilitated. Awareness-raising activities on good hygiene practices are set up beforehand. Through these sessions, participants gain a better understanding of environmental and health risks; and are better able to protect themselves from it. To date, nearly 5,805 people, including 3,540 women and 2,265 men, have been sensitised in Birao’s neighbourhoods and in seven localities along the surrounding roads.

As a result of these activities, TGH’s teams have noticed a growing awareness among the populations targeted by the project, who are now more sensitive and receptive to sanitation and hygiene-related topics. Thus, after only two months, more than 412 households have committed to the construction of their own latrines.
