The beneficiaries of the action are the populations of the targeted villages: both displaced persons and host communities. 2,533 displaced people are targeted by the action, as well as 2,074 members of host communities in 11 villages in Paletwa canton.
In total, the action is expected to reach 4,607 direct beneficiaries. Most of the activities are designed to alleviate the problems faced by specific groups or to encourage specific groups to pilot new activities. However, the distribution of food will help to meet the food needs of the majority of the population, given the acute food needs identified in villages where displacement has exacerbated an already precarious situation.
The project takes into account the specific needs of women, men, girls and boys. The indirect beneficiaries will be the host populations in the villages south of Paletwa, where our intervention will target only displaced households but should benefit the whole community.
Recent clashes between the Myanmar Army (Tatmadaw) and the Arakan Army have led to displacement, loss of life and a general sense of insecurity in a region where resources and opportunities are limited and the risk of natural disasters and extreme weather events is commonplace. As reported by the Myanmar Humanitarian Fund, 2,600 people are displaced in these villages and the host community numbers around 2,000. The authorities and civil society organisations based in Paletwa have been quick to identify and try to respond to the needs of displaced people, but this is not enough due to the lack of local resources and the difficulties of transport and movement in the region. In response, the present project – devised by Triangle Génération Humanitaire and Global Family, a non-governmental NGO founded in 2005 whose mandate is to support victims of natural and man-made disasters – provides assistance to displaced people and host communities in 6 villages in Paletwa canton
Through a multi-sectoral approach, this project addresses the most urgent needs of displaced populations in terms of education, food security, health, nutrition, protection, shelter and non-food items, and relieves pressure on host communities. It is also helping to improve the quality and quantity of data, with a view to encouraging coordination and designing new interventions that take account of unmet needs, invest in preparedness and strengthen the links between peace-building efforts and development actions.
