The inhabitants of the two States of Chin and Rakhine are experiencing difficulties in terms of food security, employment opportunities, market access, and lack of social services and investment. In response, this project – implemented by Triangle Génération Humanitaire in Chin State (Matupi) and by GRET in the north of the State and in Rakhine – concerns a total of 8,000 families (40,000 inhabitants) in 94 villages as well as the town centres of Paletwa, Matupi and Kyauktaw. TGH has been working in the Chin since 2012, mainly in the food security and rural development sectors. For its part, GRET has been running microfinance and agricultural development programmes in northern Chin since 1995, gradually building the capacity of the Chin Microfinance Institution and the Choklei Organization for Rural and Agricultural Development (CORAD).
This project is developing a multi-sectoral approach that includes: support for agriculture and nutrition, actions to improve access to water and sanitation, the development of financial services, and support for local communities and NGOs in accessing and sustainably using natural resources. These activities are implemented through support for information and a consultative process, dialogue and raising awareness of the peace process.
This 4-year project involves communities directly and over the long term, from the initial diagnostic phase through to the strengthening of local and community organisations. Specific, long-term support will enable local people and households to take ownership of the tools and activities proposed.
