Ensuring children return to school in the best possible conditions

Iraq still bears the deep scars of years of conflict and crisis.

Today, nearly one million people remain displaced within the country—including many families. For them, accessing protection and education services remains a major challenge, threatening the future of a generation of children.

Since September 2025, the TGH team in Iraq, in partnership with Terre des Hommes Italy and with the support of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), has been taking concrete action to strengthen child protection, provide psychosocial support, and facilitate access to education.

In the first few weeks of the project, 30 child protection cases were opened to support children who were not in school, victims of conflict, exposed to child labor, or suffering from psychological distress. At the same time, two temporary learning spaces were set up in Filita and Eitha—safe places conducive to psychosocial support, encouragement, and learning.

The “Back to Learning” campaign, launched simultaneously, identified 181 out-of-school children in Filita village , the area most affected by displacement.

Starting in October, thanks to collaboration with families and local authorities, 34 children were able to be reintegrated into the formal school system in Shirqat. At the same time, non-formal education classes were set up in Eitha and Filita, enabling more than 300 children to receive basic education (Arabic, English, math, science), with remedial sessions for those who had missed several years of school—in order to gradually prepare them for a return to formal schooling.

This first phase of the intervention continued until the end of 2025, with the aim of expanding access to education throughout the governorate of Salah Al Din in 2026.
