Programme details

This project contributed to reducing the risk of cholera outbreak spread through WASH interventions in health centers and among displaced persons, refugees, host communities, and non-host communities affected by the cholera epidemic.

A Cholera outbreak was declared in Sudan, country-wide on August 12, 2024. The deteriorating living conditions due to more than 16 months of conflict, coupled with recent flooding in July and August 2024 that further destroyed WASH facilities, have led to multiple epidemics in the country.

The destruction of WASH infrastructure, health facilities and limited or unsafe access to public services due to the conflict make this outbreak spread more quickly and have more severe consequences.

Considering the recent Cholera outbreak, Easter States are the most affected states in the country, including Red Sea State. TGH and its local partner DCD, contributed to reduce the risk of cholera outbreak through WASH interventions in both Port Sudan and Sawakin locality, which has been identified with high cholera rates and WASH gaps according to WES data. TGH intervened in seven gathering site in Port Sudan locality (Almorabaat school for boys, Osama ibn Afan, Arkweet school for boys, Elnobg school, Al Rayyan,Sotraba site and Hai Alshatte school for boys). In Sawakin locality TGH will rehabilitate a water yard in Sublimate area (24km from Sawakin town).

Additionally, TGH and its local partner DCD worked closely with Health Facilities and Schools. TGH provided safe access to water through Water Trucking, chlorination of water sources, rehabilitation of water yards. DCD complemented TGH’s water source chlorination, with household-level aquatabs distribution in areas where they are considered of having higher risk to access unsafe sources. As a complement of these activities, DCD conducted Cholera prevention campaigns and support Health Facilities through Cholera kits distribution.

This intervention is part of the SHF’s 2024 – SHF Reserve for Emergencies (Rapid funding to newly emerging humanitarian needs 4) Cholera response plan.
