On 15 April 2023, fighting broke out in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, between two armed forces: the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Hemedti and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) with General Al-Burhan.
The conflict quickly spread to other towns and states in Sudan, including Darfur.
The population suffered the consequences of this conflict. In October 2023, the death toll was estimated at 9,000, a figure that is probably highly underestimated. The number of displaced Sudanese exceeds 5.4 million, including 4.2 million in other regions of Sudan and 1.07 million in neighbouring countries.
People’s living conditions have been considerably affected, with very limited access to water and food. The rising cost of living means that communities can no longer meet their needs, and many children have been taken out of school and still have no access to education. The security challenges are also considerable for the population, with an increase in violence, looting and sexual violence. It is estimated that 70% of the country’s health facilities have been affected by the war and are no longer operational.
Les conditions de travail des acteurs humanitaires sont rendues difficiles par le contexte sécuritaire, l’imprévisibilité de la couverture du réseau téléphonique et d’internet, la perturbation des marchés et des moyens de transport.
Sudan
TGH has been working in Sudan since 2004. The majority of our work takes place in Darfur, despite the difficult and precarious context. From time to time, TGH has also worked in other states of the country (notably South Kordofan and Gedaref). 9 bases have been opened between 2004 and 2023.
After 15 April 2023, TGH took exceptional measures to ensure the safety of its teams. Coordination offices have been moved from Khartoum to Port Sudan, and our teams remain mobilised to assess and respond to new needs as effectively as possible.
TGH is now working in consortium with other international NGOs in Darfur, near the border with Chad, and in Jazeera and Khartoum states.
The aim of our programmes is to respond to the immediate needs of the population. TGH focuses on its areas of expertise, providing a response in terms of access to water, hygiene and sanitation, protection and education, as well as support for food security and livelihoods. We work in partnership with other specialist organisations to address other needs.
Particular attention is paid to localisation of aid, with TGH working with local partners to strengthen their capacity to assess needs, design projects and implement activities.
