The post-natural disaster emergency programme implemented by TGH in Nepal, with financial support from the Fondation de France, aims to provide practical emergency aid to people affected by earthquakes and monsoon rains in the Kavrepalanchok district. The Rhône-Méditérannée-Corse and Adour Garonne water agencies also supported the project.
289 households (around 54% of the population of Koshidekha) have benefited from access to sanitation facilities that reduce health risks;
531 households (492 households in Koshidekha and 39 households in Aaphghat, i.e. 100% of the population directly affected by the earthquake in these two villages) benefited from improved access to basic hygiene conditions thanks to the distribution of hygiene kits;
492 households (100% of the population of Koshidekha) have benefited from access to medical equipment and basic medicines through the distribution of first aid kits in each neighbourhood of the village;
395 households (29.5% of the total population of Koshidekha and 38% of the total population of Kharelthok) had access to an improved water supply network;
492 households (100% of the population of Koshidekha directly affected by the earthquake) received material and technical support to build temporary shelters.
The indirect beneficiaries of the action proposed by TGH are the entire population of the targeted villages (Koshidekha, Aaphghat and Kharelthok), including people severely affected by the earthquakes (who have lost part or all of their homes) as well as those who have kept their homes, i.e. a total of around 4,940 people. The entire population will indirectly benefit from an overall improvement in basic hygiene in the targeted villages.
TGH has set up initiatives aimed at restoring basic hygiene conditions, supporting the inhabitants through the winter period and helping to revive the economy in the village of Koshidekha, in order to mitigate the consequences of the two earthquakes that hit the country. In addition, a preliminary action to revive agriculture by distributing seeds was carried out in mid-May thanks to the support of the Rhône Alpes Region.
For its emergency multi-sector action, TGH relies on its local partner, ARSOW-Nepal (Association for Rural Social Welfare), a local Nepalese NGO working for social development in the fields of Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH), agriculture, the environment and protection. The latter was met during the post-earthquake evaluation mission carried out in Nepal by TGH, and recommended by the Fondation de France, with which a partnership was in progress.
Since then, TGH and ARSOW-Nepal have signed a partnership agreement and are working together on this multi-sectoral emergency action. While the local NGO provides TGH with its roots, contacts and experience in implementing programmes in the target district, TGH supports ARSOW-Nepal in particular through its recognised expertise and experience in the financial, administrative and logistical management of emergency projects funded by the main international donors.
The district targeted by TGH’s emergency action was severely affected by the two earthquakes, particularly in rural areas where buildings are almost exclusively made of dry stone or earth-bonded masonry. Kavrepalanchok was one of the 14 districts hardest hit by the 2 earthquakes and their aftershocks, with around 318 people killed and 1,179 injured.
