Programme details

Sudan has been facing a serious and brutal humanitarian crisis since 15 April 2023. The massive needs generated by the war are extremely complex and require an emergency response that exceeds the capabilities of traditional interventions.

In response to this unprecedented situation, TGH has partnered with Solidarités International, Concern Worldwide, Première Urgence Internationale, and two Sudanese humanitarian organisations – SUDO and CAFA –  to deliver a comprehensive, tailored response. This multi-stakeholder project covers several states in Darfur (West, Central, North and South).

The total budget for the project is €12.3 million, of which €3.450 million is for TGH activities.

The response is based on a dual first- and second-line approach. The first line comprises an Emergency Response Mechanism (ERM), which is implemented to ensure rapid operations aimed at providing vital assistance. The second line comprises sustainable multisectoral support, which is planned to meet longer-term needs.

The ERM is designed to provide flexible and immediate responses to large-scale or localised shocks in Darfur. It deploys responses in different sectors within three to eleven days of an alert being raised. The sectors covered by the ERM are:

  • Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH);
  • Shelter and non-food items;
  • Multi-purpose cash assistance;
  • Health services;
  • Protection in emergencies.

A harmonised system for humanitarian monitoring, alerts and rapid needs assessments (RNAs) is also being set up among all consortium members to enable rapid decision-making. Meanwhile, pre-positioned stocks and mobile teams are being prepared for rapid deployment. This is being coordinated in close collaboration with the Cash Consortium for Sudan (CCS) and all relevant clusters and agencies.

Beyond the immediate response, the intervention includes longer-term, area-specific activities to sustain progress and address emerging vulnerabilities. Activities focusing on WASH, health, nutrition and protection are being carried out in areas affected by population displacement and conflict, including West, Central, North and South Darfur, as well as Al Jazeera State.

As part of the consortium’s activities, Triangle Génération Humanitaire (TGH) is focusing its humanitarian response on protection and WASH.

In terms of protection, TGH identifies and supports people in distress. Teams provide psychosocial support, particularly to children and adolescents, whether they are isolated or not. Mobile teams are deployed to provide assistance, even in remote areas. TGH sets up ‘Child-Friendly Spaces‘ in camps for displaced persons and in isolated areas, providing children with a safe environment. In these spaces, children can express their trauma to someone who will listen, and regain emotional well-being.

Regarding water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), TGH organises the distribution of drinking water, especially in the Golo and Tawila camps. These distributions are carried out using trucks and flexible tanks installed by TGH. To facilitate water collection, teams install suitable taps and distribute non-food items such as jerry cans. To limit the risk of waterborne diseases, particularly cholera, TGH implements awareness-raising and hygiene promotion activities. Hygiene kits are distributed to families, and people are trained to become ‘hygiene promoters’ within their communities to increase the impact of these activities and ensure the dissemination of good practices is more effective.
