Programme details

In continuation of and in coherence with the work that TGH have provided in Central Darfur over the past 19 years, the proposed project aims at improving the nutritional status, food autonomy and resilience of vulnerable populations in the locality of Bendasi by assisting 400 households from the host community and the internally displaced people. This equals a total of 2,400 direct beneficiaries. TGH will provide a response to the nutrition and food security needs in the area as part of TGH’s contribution to the famine prevention strategy and redressing efforts, through direct cash-based transfer assistance. The project will also include activities aiming at improving the nutrition, food diversification and resilience of the targeted households through the implementation of kitchen gardening, backyard poultry raising and small business funding (income generating activities in agri-food).

The project’s main target are Pregnant and Lacting Women (for the role they play in infants nutrition), and 0-23 months children (the most at risk of nutrition-related morbidities and mortality). Women leading households will also be prioritized since they constitute a high percentage of the population. By targeting women, the project aims to improve the nutritive situation of the whole household.

The whole project will be conducted following a community-based approach to ensure the involvement of the targeted beneficiaries through the existing community mechanisms, which will be strengthened as relevant.Community volunteers will be trained during the project course to be able to scale up the project results and to ensure long-term improvement of local capacities. Where they exist, considering the critical situation that institutions in Sudan are facing, the project will coordinate with local authorities, mainly agriculture and livestock department.

The project combines direct (material) assistance and knowledge-based activities; this choice has been made according to the context of the targeted locality. Currently, the high number of population in the IPC 4 and IPC 3 phase requires assistance in the short-term to mitigate the risks of famine and malnutrition. The long-term critical situation in Darfur (even prior to the April 2024 clashes), requires the adoption of long-term strategies to provide the population with tools to develop their capacity to respond to their food needs by their own means. By working in an area that TGH is well-experienced in, and building on ongoing activities, TGH sees this project as a way to scale up its contribution to addressing the food crisis there and to make the French Government’s funding as impactful as possible.

TGH designed this intervention taking into account the principles of the London food assistance convention.TGH is planning actions to restore the nutrition status, autonomy and resilience of targeted communities by supporting local micro businesses, kitchen gardening activities and backyard poultry activities. TGH is also planning food assistance through cash transfer.
