Indonesia (2005...2009)

Context

On 26 December 2004, at 7.58 a.m. local time, the US Geological Survey (USGS) detected an earthquake of exceptional magnitude, measuring 9 on the Richter scale, in the Indian Ocean. The epicentre was located off the island of Sumatra, 250 km south/southeast of the city of Banda Aceh, at a depth of 10 km.

More than 230,000 people have died in the disaster that has struck South Asia following the earthquake and subsequent tidal wave in the Indian Ocean. Eleven countries have been affected, particularly the Indonesian province of Aceh in Sumatra, very close to the epicentre of the earthquake that triggered the tsunami.

TGH in Indonesia

Following the tidal wave, TGH mobilised to provide an emergency response to the needs of the affected population. After initial rehabilitation efforts, TGH quickly moved to support the resumption of economic activities in the affected coastal areas.

Among other things, TGH has built boats and revived fishermen’s cooperatives, including rehabilitating canal banks and providing management training. TGH has also provided psychosocial support to victims of the disaster, especially children.
