Yusuf’s story

The European Union and its Member States are among the world’s leading donors of humanitarian aid.

Relief assistance is an expression of European solidarity with people in need all around the world. It aims to save lives, prevent and alleviate human suffering, and safeguard the integrity and human dignity of populations affected by disasters and human-induced crises.

Through the Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations of the European Commission, the European Union helps millions of victims of conflict and disasters every year.

With headquarters in Brussels and a global network of field offices, the EU provides assistance to the most vulnerable people on the basis of humanitarian needs.

At just 16, Yusuf has already been through more than most adults. He grew up in difficult circumstances, carrying the heavy burden of his father’s past as a member of an armed group. His childhood was marked by uncertainty and survival.

Forced to leave school and work to support his family, Yusuf’s dreams of learning slowly began to fade. Yet deep inside him, the thirst for knowledge never left.

It was then that his path crossed that of Triangle Génération Humanitaire’s protection team in Iraq. Since then, Yusuf and his family have benefited from psychosocial and financial support. This support enabled him to return to school.

Today, Yusuf is back in class and performing brilliantly. His determination has made him an inspiring example for his community. His teachers have awarded him a certificate of recognition for his efforts: Yusuf came third in his first semester exams.

His journey shows that the future is never frozen in the past, and that with determination and support, a life can truly change.

His history in pictures

The support given to Yusuf and his family is part of Triangle Génération Humanitaire‘s protection and education work in Iraq.

Supported by the European Union, via the Directorate-General for Civil Protection and European Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), these operations aim to help children in difficulty and support them as they return to school. Families and communities are also involved in these efforts to get children into school, through a wide range of initiatives to raise awareness of the importance of education.
