Rebuilding the Future for Displaced Children in Iraq through Education and Psychosocial Support

Practical humanitarian actions to strengthen resilience and safeguard children

In Iraq, the consequences of years of war continue to affect tens of thousands of internally displaced families. A large number of children are deprived of access to education, social integration and psychological stability.

In response to this situation, the TGH team in Iraq is carrying out humanitarian actions to promote child protection and access to education, with the support of the European Union and in partnership with the IOM, in order to support the resilience of displaced children.

Over the past few months, our team has provided psychosocial support to 62 children in the villages of Filleta and Ethaa. Through a combination of recreational activities and group and individual sessions, our social workers have been able to help the children develop their emotional resilience, self-confidence, communication skills and stress management techniques.

The quality of support also depends on the environment in which it is provided. TGH has therefore partnered with local authorities to clear 10 tonnes of waste from the area around an educational centre, transforming it into a safe play and sports area for children.

Additionally, TGH has prioritised collaborating closely with communities, families and local authorities to raise adult awareness of education’s importance in providing children with stability.

On World Children’s Day at the end of November 2025, 83 local actors gathered in Filleta to reaffirm their collective commitment to children’s rights and access to education, particularly for those deprived of documents following years of conflict.

Our team also ran a large-scale awareness campaign and set up safe spaces. A total of 551 members of the Filleta and Shirqat communities were mobilised to combat school dropout rates.

Supporting children in Iraq is a humanitarian imperative that will help to build a secure future.
