Programme details

As part of its efforts to limit the spread of faecal-oral diseases, TGH implements an integrated approach to sanitation and hygiene promotion among host populations, refugees and returnees in at-risk areas. The first objective is to ensure that communities have access to basic sanitation facilities. To this end, the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach is being used, enabling communities to actively participate in the construction of latrines through social mobilisation activities, analysis of hygiene practices and awareness-raising on the dangers of open defecation. Technical support is provided in the form of 100 reinforced concrete slabs and community tools to support the most vulnerable households. Opening and closing ceremonies are also organised to strengthen ownership of the project by local authorities and communities.

The second objective of the project is to improve the knowledge and attitudes of the target populations regarding hygiene. Awareness campaigns tailored to the local context are conducted using various communication channels (leaflets, mobile loudspeakers, community volunteers), focusing on key practices such as hand washing, proper use of latrines and waste management. In addition, TGH is conducting an initial survey to identify hygiene gaps and a final survey to measure the impact of the interventions, thus ensuring rigorous monitoring of behavioural changes.
