World Environment Day Celebrations in Sudan

In Sudan, TGH is mobilising communities for a healthier environment despite ongoing humanitarian challenges.

To mark World Environment Day 2026, TGH Sudan, with support from the European Union’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department (ECHO), organised a series of awareness-raising and community mobilisation activities in partnership with local authorities, government institutions, community leaders, its local partner SUDO, and the media.

On 3 and 4 June, more than 1,000 people took part in celebrations in Dalawat Al Bahar and Dalawat Algoz. Activities included two solid waste management campaigns that benefited 5,277 people and resulted in the collection of 150 tonnes of waste, four awareness campaigns on sanitation and recycling, two environmental sessions for women, and the planting of around 120 trees in schools and TGH protection spaces.

Solar lamps were distributed and installed, while theatre performances, songs and dances helped reinforce environmental awareness messages.

On 6 June, a similar celebration was held in the Tawila Debanira displacement camp, bringing together local authorities, water committees, community representatives and theatre groups. The event combined environmental awareness-raising, waste management and water resource protection activities, the planting of 40 neem trees, psychosocial support activities for children, and cultural performances.

At the same time, TGH supported the cholera isolation centres in Madani Al Koubra by distributing WASH kits containing chlorine, soap, spraying equipment, personal protective equipment and awareness-raising materials. These activities helped promote sustainable hygiene practices and strengthen community engagement in support of a healthier environment.
