Since April 2025, TGH has been implementing the Darfood project in North Darfur State. Funded through the French Initiative for Food Security and Nutrition (IFSAN) by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, this emergency project supports people affected by conflict and forced displacement through food assistance and livelihood recovery activities, including market gardening training, the distribution of agricultural inputs, and food vouchers.
One of the project’s beneficiaries is Mariah, a mother of four whose story reflects both the challenges faced by many families in the region and the opportunities created through these activities.

Originally from the village of Tabit, around 30 kilometres from Debena, Mariah now lives in Debena with her four children, aged between 4 and 12, in a traditional goteha house. Her life has been marked by repeated displacement. In 2003, when conflict first broke out in Sudan, she fled to El Fasher, the main town in North Darfur. In April 2025, renewed violence forced her to flee once again and return to Debena.
Through the Darfood project, Mariah received training in market gardening. Using the seeds provided by TGH, she now grows radishes, onions and giri-giri close to her home.
For now, her harvest is mainly used to feed her family. However, she hopes to increase her production so that she can begin selling part of her crops and earn an additional source of income.
Alongside this, Mariah has also received food vouchers through the project, providing vital support for her household. Despite this assistance, she remains concerned about the upcoming lean season, fearing it will place even greater pressure on her family’s food security.
By combining emergency assistance with livelihood recovery activities, the Darfood project is helping households like Mariah’s gradually strengthen their food security and build resilience in the face of ongoing conflict. These activities are implemented by TGH with funding from IFSAN.
