Food Assistance for Displaced Families in Al Jazirah State
In Al Jazirah State, Sudan, the conflict has forced many families to flee their homes and face deteriorating living conditions and limited access to food.
Among them is Ikhlas Rajab Koko, a mother of eight, who was forced to flee her community with her family and seek safety in the Al Faki Hashim area. Their journey took place under particularly difficult conditions, as they travelled along remote paths to avoid attacks and armed clashes.
Before the conflict, the family relied on the salary of Ikhlas’s husband, who worked for the Ministry of Health. After he developed a serious heart condition requiring open-heart surgery, the family was left without a stable source of income. They gradually sold their livestock to meet their most basic needs before facing severe food insecurity.
As part of its food security and livelihoods response, TGH provides food assistance to the most vulnerable families through a voucher programme. Ikhlas was able to use the vouchers to access essential food items and better meet her family’s nutritional needs.
“I was extremely happy and pleased to have joined the programme. This assistance supported us enormously, and the milk was particularly beneficial for my children.”

Regular access to a more diverse and nutritious diet particularly contributed to improving the children’s health, while also reducing the financial pressure and stress faced by the family.
“The food assistance was comprehensive enough to ensure good nutrition. It reduced our stress and was a huge help to our family.”

For Ikhlas, this assistance provided essential support during a period marked by displacement and heightened vulnerability. It enabled her family to regain greater stability and better meet their food needs.
“We were in a very difficult situation, but thanks to God, our condition improved after receiving the food assistance. We are deeply grateful to TGH for the support because it helped us tremendously.”
