In Sudan, DarFood Supports Khamis’ Agricultural Production and Income

In Gimeza, West Darfur, Khamis is responsible for a large household. He lives with two widows, his daughter and her four children, his sister-in-law and her seven children, as well as his own five children. To meet the needs of his large family, agriculture is an essential source of food and income.

When the local Committee informed him that another household had declined the seed and agricultural tools assistance, Khamis was selected to participate in the DarFood project, as he met the eligibility criteria.

Khamis cultivates approximately 1.5 hectares of farmland. Before joining the project, he was already growing sweet potatoes and eggplants. Through DarFood, he received seeds for cucumbers, onions, tomatoes and girgir, as well as agricultural tools, enabling him to diversify his production.

“Before the project, I used to earn around 20,000 Sudanese pounds from selling my vegetables. Last week, I earned 51,000 Sudanese pounds.”

Despite the recent theft of his generator, which powered his irrigation pump, Khamis continues to cultivate his land. His farm also has four large mango trees and numerous guava trees, contributing to his household’s dietary diversity.

To fertilise his land, Khamis uses manure collected from nearby grazing areas, supplemented with ash produced from crop residues. This method allows him to fertilise his fields while continuing to grow vegetables throughout the year.

Part of his produce is used to feed his family, while the surplus is sold at the local market. The income generated from these sales allows him to purchase food and other essential items for his household.

Thanks to the support received through DarFood, Khamis has been able to diversify his crops, increase his income from vegetable sales, and improve his family’s access to food.
