The Sinjar region has been marked by fighting and the occupation of the Islamic State from 2014. The Yezidi populations have been particularly affected: adult men have been systematically massacred, and thousands of women and children have been kidnapped, forcedly converted to Islam and made fighters or sexual slaves. This violence, qualified as genocide by the United Nations, and the fighting that followed caused the displacement of almost the entire population to Iraqi Kurdistan or Mount Sinjar. The Arab families who also fled are accused of complacency with the Islamic State and their return is not accepted. In February 2020, more than 330,000 IDPs were still living in camps in the Ninewa governorate, and 690,000 in Iraqi Kurdistan, with no prospect of return.

In addition to the destruction of fields and production factors in this agricultural region, the current global health crisis linked to Covid-19 worsens the economic difficulties of the most vulnerable families. The Iraqi authorities have adopted measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including the closure of airports and movement restrictions between governorates. In Sinjar, these measures have led to difficulties in the supply and movement of agricultural products, considerably reducing production capacities.

Thus, the project carried out by TGH aims at addressing these difficulties linked to the current sanitary context, but also at relaunching agricultural activities in a sustainable way. In order to respect sanitary measures, an online catalogue of equipment and agricultural inputs will be developed by TGH teams, so that each beneficiary can choose according to his needs and activities.

TGH will support in particular vegetable farming activities, family orchards and small-scale animal farms. The people targeted by the project will not only receive the material necessary to relaunch their activities, but they will also benefit from specific technical training.
