On 18 July, our team successfully organised the ‘Mini Agro Expo‘ in Bhanimandal, Lalitpur, in collaboration with our local partner, Farmers for Rural Development (FRDEV), and the Nepal Agricultural Co-operative Central Federation Ltd. (NACCFL).
This initiative is part of the ‘Sustainable Food Value Chain‘ (SFVC) project, implemented by TGH in partnership with Médecins du Monde and supported by the Agence française de développement, the Fondation de France and the Lord Michelham of Hellingly Foundation. The SFVC operates throughout Bagmati Province to strengthen rural livelihoods, promote organic farming and improve food security.
Bringing healthy food to the community
The fair’s main aim was simple: to create a direct link between small-scale farmers and local cooperatives, and urban consumers.
Throughout the day, 28 farmers from 12 agricultural cooperatives showcased a variety of local produce, including fresh seasonal fruit, coffee, honey, dried mushrooms, and dairy products such as ghee and paneer.
Direct impact and feedback from the community
The event was a resounding success, attracting over 270 visitors, including representatives from government bodies, development partners, and the local media. As well as providing excellent networking and awareness-raising opportunities, the fair generated immediate economic value, with the participating farmers making approximately 277,270 NPR in direct sales.
Feedback has been extremely positive from all sides:
- Farmers have benefited from direct access to new customers and higher profit margins.
- Consumers appreciated being able to buy safe and traceable local food products and have called for this fair to become a regular event.
