Programme details
This two-year project, implemented with the support of the FIFA Foundation, aims to strengthen the resilience of disadvantaged children and young people (both male and female) and the community through sport. This will be achieved with the support of local institutions and civil society actors in order to prevent violent extremism and promote social cohesion by facilitating personal and social reintegration in Kirkuk.
The actions implemented by TGH form part of Iraq’s National Development Plan for 2018–2028, contributing to the goal of creating an environment that supports young people. The project has been designed in line with national strategies for empowering children and young people, building their capacity to address social challenges, and encouraging their participation in community development.
The overall objective of this project is to facilitate access to sport for children and young people. More specifically, the aim is to develop sports activities that empower young people and strengthen their role in promoting resilience, social cohesion, and the reconstruction of their communities in Kirkuk.
Why take such action?
The population of Kirkuk faces numerous stress factors. Years of crisis have disrupted social ties and led to a lack of community support, even today. Added to this are traumatic personal experiences, human rights violations, discrimination, and violent extremism. Displaced populations also experience difficult living conditions, the loss of property, and uncertainty about the future.
This project aims to improve access to and participation in football, a human right recognised in any sport. It develops football activities that empower children and young people, strengthening their role in promoting resilience, social cohesion, and community reconstruction.
Through the construction of football pitches and the creation of opportunities to play the sport, the project aims to improve the psychological and social well-being and strengthen the overall resilience of children and young people affected by conflict in the Kirkuk district.
The various activities implemented address the problems affecting Kirkuk and its young population by offering alternatives to negative coping mechanisms, negative relationships between community members affected by trauma and divisions, and the marginalisation of young people. They operate at three levels: individual, community and governance, while laying the foundations for long-term results at each of these three levels.
